About the Department of Drama
The Department of Drama was established in 1987 to become one of the firmly rooted academic pillars of the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Tripoli, founded in response to a pressing cultural and artistic need for a specialized educational institution devoted to the Dramatic Arts in Libya. Since its inception, the Department has taken on the mission of preparing artistic and academic cadres capable of elevating the local theatrical and cultural scene, through integrated study programs that combine theoretical foundations in Theatre Theory and its history with the practical requirements of Acting, Directing, and Stage Production techniques.
The Department today comprises three specialized academic programs: the Acting & Directing Program, the Set Design & Stage Techniques Program (Scenography), and the Dramatic Criticism & Playwriting Program — programs that together reflect a comprehensive academic vision grounded in the belief that the theatrical process is an indivisible, integrated creative system. Over decades of contribution, the Department has graduated generations of artists and academics who have shaped the conscience of the Libyan theatrical movement and enriched its journey with distinguished artistic and research achievements.
